Brass Choir - Free!

Confronting the Mirror

Here is a piece I wrote for my masters degree at the University of Victoria. It is for brass choir with a solo percussion part. Confronting the Mirror oscillates between 2 main contrasting sections. The first section is stylistically expressionistic, although there is a bit of serialism (find the tone rows) incorporated. That being said, I still like the way it sounds. For me, the music (and not the method) is the first consideration.

The second section is lyrical in nature, and is still one of my favourite things I have ever written. It is grandios, beautiful and soaring. On a side note, it is also written with contrasting motion - the higher the trumpets get, the lower the low brass gets. And all this with chimes in the background.

Our percussionist wanted to use as many 'toys' as possible and said I had complete freedom when choosing instruments. It is written for one (good) percussionist, but it should also work nicely with 2 or 3 players. I imagine that it would be playable with some substitutions of instruments, as well. For example the timpani's could be various toms and or bass drums, and the chimes can be vibraphone or something else. Please feel free to write me an email and discuss it, if you think you would like to try this piece.

A bit on the the ambitious side, I would expect this song to be playable by University ensembles or professional groups.
