Big Band Arrangements...

My Dear - Free

My Dear is a composition which I had originally created for a composition assignment, while I was studying at the Swiss Jazz School in Bern, Switzerland. My Dear began life as a simple leadsheet, progressed into an arrangement for rhythm section and 4 horns, and eventually was arranged for full big band with solo vocalist.

There is a recurring shuffle groove that has more than a bit of pop feel to it. And there are swing sections mixed in throughout, to make the pop sections stand out more. My Dear's chord changes are reminiscent of the Thad Jone's song, A Child is Born. There is fun canon section for the horns in the middle that I still really like (which I think should be heavily swung, but some like it straight).

There is a guitar part written that (lightly) doubles the vocals, and then takes the solo. However the song will work fine without guitar, as long as someone takes over the solos and the end, where the soloist and vocalist improvise over the band.
